MAKING THEIR MARK

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Since the word “tattoo” comes from the Polynesian word Ta-Tau, meaning “to strike repeatedly”, a process inflicted on the skin by a pigment-dipped needle resulting in a tattoo, “Art Soul Skin” is not for the faint-hearted. On display are life-size portraits, close-ups of the etching process as well as videos of academic discussions on the subject. At the show’s opening today there will be an assortment of real-life tattooed torsos on show as aficionados battle for tattoo supremacy.

Bill legalizing tattoos in OK approved by House

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Senate Bill 806, by state Sen. Frank Shurden, D-Hanna, and carried in the House by state Rep. Al Lindley, D-Oklahoma City, passed quickly without debate on the House floor, though one member questioned whether there can be shown a correlation between tattooing and gang activity.

House members also agreed by a two-thirds majority to amend the bill to allow body piercing for minors if their parent is present for the procedure and gives written consent, in keeping with current practice. However, the bill prohibits tattooing for anyone under the age of 18, regardless of parental consent.

SB 806 would also require all body piercing and tattoo establishments to put up a $100,000 surety bond, which would go toward liability costs if their procedures led to a hepatitis infection. The measure would make it illegal to tattoo a person who is impaired by drugs or alcohol, as well as prohibit new body piercing or tattoo establishments from setting up shop within 1,000 feet of a school, church or playground.

Local municipalities would have the authority to issue more stringent regulations on the practice of tattooing. As amended by the House Health and Human Services Committee, SB 806 would also slash the cost of fees for performing micro-pigmentation, or permanent makeup procedures, bringing the cost of the original certification from the current $1,000 down to $500, and allowing for renewals to cost just $100, instead of the current $500.

Because the House of Representatives made changes to the bill, SB 806 will next go back to the Senate - where the measure began its journey in the Legislature more than a year ago - for another vote. If the Senate approves of the changes made by the House, the measure can be sent to the governor’s desk for his signature; otherwise, members of both legislative chambers can try to work out a compromise in a conference committee.

Every tattoo tells a story

There is much more to this Cal football player than his nine tattoos, which serve to reveal his character, lineage and interests.

A Viking god and ship grace his left bicep. A personal tribute to his dead brother is scripted on his right bicep. “Music is life” is written across his left calf. The punk-rock band AFI is saluted twice by his neck.

“The tattoos are all Norse and music-related,” he explained.

Robertson is Nordic himself, and he plays a mean bass, which explains the music tattoos. But how many college footfrom Sports 1

ball linemen are majoring in Scandinavian, and carrying a B average besides?

The 6-foot-2, 305-pound Robertson, a junior, starts at left guard for the 4-0 Golden Bears on one of the finest offensive lines in the country.

He views his body as an art museum, and sees tattoos as art pieces waiting to be hung — forever.

“I know the connotation is that they’re kinda hood-ish or gangsterlike,” he said. “But I’m into music, and seeing my favorite musicians with tattoos also kind of sparked it.”

Robertson has designed some of his tattoos, or taken them out of books, but he insists on only the finest “artists” to apply them.

He is the only new starter on Cal’s offensive front this year.

Temporary Tattoo

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Background

A temporary tattoo is a decorative image that can be applied to the skin for short periods of time. Most temporary tattoos are novelty items made with a special type of decal. A process known as screen printing is used to create the tattoo image on paper coated with a transfer film. The transfer film allows the image to "slide" off the backing paper and onto the skin when moisture is applied. After drying, the film holds the image on the skin through several washings.

For centuries, men and women have added decorative illustrations to their skin for religious or cultural reasons. One common method of decorating skin is tattooing, a process which involves injecting patterns of dye directly into the skin using a needle. Although this technique was originally practiced in ancient Egypt, the term tattoo is actually derived from a Tahitian word that was most likely spread by sailors in the Pacific. Many other cultures have their own unique tattoo techniques. For example, Eskimos use bone needles to draw soot-covered thread through the skin and the Japanese use fine metal needles to deliver colored pigments. Regardless of which technique is used, all tattoo processes deposit colorants below the surface of the skin to create intense, permanent images. While tattooing remains a popular art form today, it is also expensive, time consuming, and may be somewhat painful. For these reasons, permanent tattoos are not necessarily desirable for every individual.

Temporary tattoos were created as an alternative way for individuals to decorate their skin. Temporary images can be produced by several methods. For example, they can be hand drawn and painted using a brush with water insoluble dyes or pigments. Although this method requires a talented artist to create a high quality image, it does produce a picture which can be removed fairly easily. A better way of achieving a temporary tattoo is by decalcomania, which is the process of applying a decal to the skin. This approach allows the user to apply a preprinted image to the skin at their convenience. Decal-style tattoos are so simple to apply that even a child can use them and the image that is produced can be easily removed with soap and water. Therefore, temporary tattoos can be easily changed to suit the whims of fancy and fashion. Decal-style temporary tattoos are made by printing an image onto special paper coated with a transfer film. To apply the tattoo the user simply moistens the paper and the film slides off the backing layer carrying the image onto the skin.
