Journeys in Social Stigma: The Lives of Formerly Incarcerated Felons in Higher Education

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

While inmates are the subject of many outlets of popular media and research, this population is rarely, however, studied in any depth. Most forms of media overlook the rehabilitative efforts made by inmates. This study attempts to evaluate education as a form of rehabilitation and identify the struggles faced by inmates while trying to finish their degrees on a traditional college campus. This study does this by focusing on the stigma, both real and perceived, that former inmates battle and how they find ways to alleviate the harmful effects of stigma caused by former incarceration.

The world of inmates is one that is hard to understand without experiencing It firsthand. The stigma, real or perceived, which inmates encounter once released is enough to keep many from developing social, professional or educational ties and seeking life enhancing opportunities. Stigma, caused by both criminal history and financial barriers, force many to find alternative ways to adapt to the world to fit in and be successful (Harrison, 2004).

This study used qualitative interviews of formerly incarcerated felons to discern how those who started rehabilitative education in prison continued these efforts on a college campus after their release and how they managed their social stigma. The interviews provide insight on how this population is affected by and handles the stigma placed upon them. The insights shared by the subjects are used as a way to understand how individuals within this population feel about themselves and how they perceive others feel about them based upon their past. This study also uses sociological theories to explain how others’ actions affect this population. This combination allows for a more complete understanding of human behavior and social interactions with this population.

It is important to note that many universities have these formerly incarcerated felons as students on campus, and many people, both fellow students and faculty alike, have no idea of who they are. By not knowing about these students’ past, the students, faculty and university staff are unable to help these individuals adapt, succeed and deal with the pressures of their past and their own rehabilitative efforts. Also, when the university community learns to accept this population, they can then see that former inmates can contribute to the community and are not to be feared. This change in attitude could help stigmatized individuals to be successful in college and therefore reduce their chances of recidivism (Harrison, 2004).

This direct reporting unit has answered the call to duty in many ways since its establishment in 1921 as the District of Washington, later the 16th Brigade, Washington Provisional Brigade, and then in World War II as the Military District of Washington.

No tourist’s visit here is complete without photographs that capture one or more of the unique roles this command fulfills, be it the reverential changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns, a patriotic outdoor Twilight Tattoo concert performance, or the respectful ceremonial Memorial Day and Veterans Day national observances. This command’s role also encompasses Joint ceremonial missions such as the inauguration ceremony of an elected President and Commander in Chief, as well as state funeral honors for a former President and his family.

The mission of MDW is to conduct operations that deter, prevent and respond to threats aimed here in the National Capital Region as well as to conduct world-class ceremonial, musical and special events. As observed during the recent state funeral for former President Ford, these two mission characteristics can be closely linked.

Rendering honors at interment ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery; receiving repatriated remains of fallen servicemembers and civilians from Iraq and Afghanistan at Dover Air Force Base, Del.; and assisting returning wounded at Andrews Air Force Base, Md., remind this command that we are an Army at war.

This awareness fuels our drive to remain focused on this parallel mission, while maintaining situational vigilance and the highest professional standards.

The message that we are an Army at war is also carried to the American public through the special qualifications of the U.S. Army Band (Pershing’s Own) and the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), whose 1st Battalion has one of its four line companies deployed to the Horn of Africa in support of the global war on terrorism.

In addition to official performances that range from senior leader change-of-command ceremonies to visits from heads of state, soldiers of the Army Band and the 3rd Infantry Regiment stay routinely in the public eye and ear through a broad range of outreach events numbering in the hundreds during the course of the year. These Army ambassadors - singly and in teams, details, ensembles and formations - reveal the professionalism and expertise of the Army while epitomizing its strength of character and soul.

The professionalism witnessed during The Old Guard’s ceremonial performances is rich in Army tradition and presents an impressive image that extends around the globe. The discipline and solemnity the soldiers display awe millions of American and foreign spectators who witness the Sentinels at the Tomb of the Unknowns, the Caisson Platoon, the Presidential Salute Gun Battery, the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps or the U.S. Army Drill Team.

The world-class musicians of Pershing’s Own keep bright its 85 years of service to the Army and nation with a year-round schedule of performances. Of significance are its New York City concerts at Trinity Church and Avery Fisher Hall, its Twilight Tattoos performances, its summer concerts capped by performance of the “1812 Overture,” and the holiday contributions for the Pageant of Peace on the White House Ellipse and holiday concerts at nearby Constitution Hall.

Whether performing military honors at Arlington National Cemetery or entertaining the public during a “Spirit of America” performance, Pershing’s Own and The Old Guard exemplify the values and professionalism that is today’s Army.

Virtual Customer Interactions

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

During the presentation, I mentioned that companies needed to answer e-mail in real time. It was at this point a woman in the audience raised her hand and challenged this assertion. She said people should not get used to having their email answered immediately by call centers. She was very vehement about the issue. I was in direct opposition with this notion, and my presentation turned into a debate. In the hundred plus presentations I have given since, I have never had a similar incident take place.

Thankfully, die ever-talented David Burd, who was the head of marketing at die company sponsoring the conference, stepped in, calmed the woman and allowed me to continue with my presentation.

I often think back to this woman when I e-mail companies and find they don’t immediately respond.

I still think I am right. At the same time, I’m aware that technology can change, and the adoption of such technologies and the speed at which they are implemented vary greatly from company to company. I happen to be the sort of customer who likes a company to respond to my e-mail immediately. I am more likely to buy from a company that responds to my online queries quickly.

Technology stands still for no call center, and it isn’t just e-mail that has transformed die call center into the contact center. IP communications, too, have dramatically altered the way we communicate and serve our customers. Agents located around the world can now easily serve customers. A company’s mailing address now has less and less to do with where die majority of its workers live and work, as the Internet has allowed corporations to find ever-more cost-effective ways to get work done without one central location.

If you are a long-time reader, you might remember me telling everyone in the mid-nineties to explore IP contact centers and numerous other technologies. Now it’s time for a new technology to be introduced into the customer interaction mix: If you aren’t aware of virtual worlds, you should be. The most popular of these is second Life and it is slowly becoming the 3D Internet. It has plenty of competition - but this article is not meant to analyze its various competitors, but rather focus on the potential for virtual worlds to change customer service and sales as we know it.

In a virtual world, you choose an avatar - a representation of whom you wish to be online. You dress the avatar and walk (or fly!) from place to place. Your avatar interacts in this world and can chat and use VoIP to communicate with other avatars. There is usually search functionality so you could, for example, find a car rental agency or a store to buy clothes, get more radiant skin, get a tattoo or find anything else you might wish to buy in your virtual world.

Millions of people are experimenting in virtual worlds. They interact with one another and meet in night clubs, on romantic islands, in virtual conferences and in shops.

OK, maybe not all three. But he was doing something with his hands instead of watching the road — brushing his teeth, I believe. I also saw someone with a car window down far enough that, while she was turning onto my street, her dog got brave and jumped out of the car. There was another dog in the car, about to do the same thing through another window. The woman pulled over, waited for Spot to catch up, and told him it was OK, he wasn’t in trouble.

He wasn’t in trouble? These are the people from whom parental nightmares are made. As in, it’s a good thing my kid wasn’t out front when you decided to test your multitasking ability by painting your nails, changing the CD and carving a pumpkin while driving past my house. Driving is difficult enough with all the crazies on the road. Throw in weather, darkness and the general unpredictability of people reacting to stress, on or off the road, and the roads become a mighty dangerous place.

Chicago Finds Gang Leaders Relocate To Suburbs, Use Youths As Enforcers

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

The commission identified 102 gang leaders that control 70,000 members in the Chicago area and used their numbers to try to infiltrate law enforcement agencies, have used radio stations to communicate with members and broadened their activities from vice crimes to mortgage fraud and money laundering.

Chicago Police Sgt. Joseph Petrenko, who helped the Chicago Crime Commission prepare The Gang Book, a new 272-page guide on criminal gangs, said he was struck by how old many of the 102 listed Chicago area gang leaders are.

For instance, George Davis, named as a leader of the Black Gangsters/New Breed, is 68.

“A police department might overlook a guy who is over 50,” Petrenko said. “The young guys are the enforcers, but the older ones are calling the shots. Departments need to pay attention to them.”

The Chicago Crime Commission stands as one of the oldest and most respected citizen crime commissions in the nation.

The commission exploded the myth of youth gangs controlling the streets and accelerating the rate of criminal violence.

Instead, the commission said, “the average leader of a Chicago street gang is 43, and more often than not he lives in the leafy suburbs of Cook County.”

Besides being middle age, the typical gang leader has been convicted of murder and maintains control over gang members even when he is in prison.

Some gang leaders have tried to place their members in the legitimate workforce as employees of the Cook County Clerk’s office, the Cook County Sheriffs office and the Chicago Police Department. Gang members have even tried to infiltrate the College of DuPage’s criminal justice classes, said the commission.

“When he winds up behind bars, he communicates with his gang soldiers through a number of ingenious methods: He may write letters in urine, a secret ink that becomes visible when exposed to heat; he may send messages in ‘micro-writing’ in languages like Swahili and runic, and he may subpoena fellow gang members to appear at his court hearings and give them orders through hand signals,” said the commission.”

In one instance, the commission said, “detectives investigating a murder discovered gang members were baiting their rivals on a radio call-in show.”
