Tattoo bill scheduled for committee hearing in Oklahoma House

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

Senate Bill 806, by state Sen. Frank Shurden and Lindley, has awaited a hearing in a House committee since last year. But on Tuesday, state Rep. Kris Steele, R-Shawnee, chairman of the House Health and Human Services Committee, announced he has agreed to schedule the bill for a hearing on April 3.

I’ve gotten hearings before, but this is the first time that I really, positively think I’ve got a really good chance of getting it on the House floor, said Lindley, D-Oklahoma City. It’s about time.

Oklahoma officially became the very last state in the United States with a tattooing ban on Tuesday, the day the first legal tattoos were performed in South Carolina.

Lindley said Oklahomans have been calling and sending e-mails - even stopping him in the street - since OETA, Oklahoma’s public television network, aired a documentary on the issue in February. The Oklahoma Department of Health and other health organizations have endorsed Lindley’s bill, citing increasing rates of hepatitis C and hepatitis B infections in Oklahoma that may stem from unregulated tattooing.

TATTOOIST Troy Harless studies the outline he just finished on shirtless Serafin Verdugo’s skin. The Golden Gate Bridge is sketched across Verdugo’s back, with Alcatraz beneath it and the words “Bay Area” arcing over the scene.

Off the cuff, Harless suggests using the fog he will work into the design to form the area codes “415″ and “707″ instead of drawing the numerals in script. His client, a Mission District native who lives in Fairfield, eagerly agrees.

“It’s gonna take several hours,” Harless says. “It’s going to be a piece that’s special for you.”

It won’t be the first Golden Gate vista Harless has inked since moving from the Los Angeles area to open Triple R Tattoo Company two years ago at 1754 El Camino Real. But the artist said each freehand design he does is unique.

“I’ll never do the same tattoo,” he said. “Everybody wants custom work.”

Harless will show off some of his latest $180-per-hour originals at the Body Art Expo, today through Sunday at the Cow Palace in Daly City. The show comes to the venue twice a year and will host about 200 nationally renowned artists, who compete in different categories. The cost to attend is $20.

Harless has a dozen tattoosup for awards, including a three-in- one special courtesy of longtime client Santos, who will exhibit for the Aztec, black-and-gray, and large-color categories.

The 37-year-old tattooist runs his shop with his wife, Julie, 36, whom he met in high school after moving from southwest Colorado to Whittier.

Being a black metal isolationist, do you still play a lot of live drums?
