Killers at large

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Tony Venenum (we’ll call him), 26, reasons that he has always taken risks in life. He was raised by a single parent and made his way in a neighborhood where toughness was a requirement for survival. He discovered, in his teens, that he had solace in male companionship, and before he was 20, had been seduced, and had lived then with Guido, an older man. Both had jobs in establishments that required conformist behavior, but then Guido took sick and the diagnosis was AIDS. The retrovirus inhibitor kept him alive and active, but after two years the poison prevailed, leaving Tony both bereft and desperate for relief, which he found in crystal meth. This cheered him greatly but also increased his craving for sex, which he engaged in diligently. But then early in June he recognized symptoms like those that had gradually disabled Guido. He didn’t consult a doctor–he had no trouble in getting access to the inhibitor drug, and the crystal meth, for a sometime street kid, was easy to find. So were more partners, to whom he didn’t confide his illness. So that when the public health official came by and told him he wanted information, and if necessary could get a warrant, Tony decided fatalistically to cooperate.

The health office wanted the names and addresses of everyone Tony had had sex with, a question that made Tony laugh through his hoarse coughing. How could he possibly reconstruct such a list? A few guys, sure, but all of them? The New York Times reports, in two stories on the new and virulent strain of AIDS, that those who seek to do something to arrest the virus are driven to “more aggressive” measures than in the past. Charles Kaiser, the historian and author of The Gay Metropolis, makes the basic point: “Gay men should not have the right to spread a debilitating and often fatal disease. A person who is HIV-positive has no more right to unprotected intercourse than he has the right to put a bullet through another person’s head.”

Public health officials are considering measures which, 20 years ago, would have been thought fascistic interventions in human rights. There is thought of infiltrating gay sites, particularly those on the Internet. What, having identified such sites, will they then do? Interpose a message about the danger of unprotected sex? Collect names and e-mail addresses, and send individual warnings to prospective victims? Such measures are not easily composed: “Dear Sir: You have recently kept company with Tony Venenum. Tony has a new and dangerous strain of AIDS and you may have contracted it. You should report to a doctor and you must not engage in unprotected sex because in doing so you may be committing murder.” The boundaries of the new campaign, let alone the niceties, haven’t been resolved upon, but not much thought is being given to con-privacy concerns of privacy. Murderers need to be stopped, and if this means opening their mail, well–such things happen and you can take comfort that you may be saving a life.

The objective is to identify the carrier, and to warn his victim. Someone, 20 years ago, suggested a discreet tattoo the site of which would alert the prospective partner to the danger of proceeding as had been planned. But the author of the idea was treated as though he had been schooled in Buchenwald, and the idea was not widely considered, but maybe it is up now for reconsideration.

Rip. Mix. Brand

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

There is something weird happening in the world of brands. Under the radar, outside the sometimes sterile corporate conversations about market positioning, brand valuation and corporate identity, a cultural revolution is under way. Like an atom smasher, our accelerating postmodern culture is hurtling people and brands together at a higher and higher rate of speed, and the results of their collision are stranger - and more compelling - than we could possibly have imagined.

For starters, to many people, brands aren’t simply in the culture, they are the culture. Marketers traditionally thought of brands as making promises about products and services, and have measured brands by how well they delivered on those promises. But today, brands are increasingly serving another function: they have become the tools with which people construct their personal and social identities. Survey the brandscape and you’ll find dating Web sites that match singles by their brand preferences - “Single Coke Male seeks Sony Female for hot times.” You’ll find a Starbucks that just opened in the lobby of a Midwestern megachurch and you’ll find people being buried out back in Harley-Davidson-branded caskets. Brands have gone from being the glue that ties companies and consumers together to being the glue that holds our very souls together.

This is part of a much larger cultural and economic story. The marketplace has become the central meaning-making institution in many people’s lives, augmenting, and in some cases replacing, everything from political to religious affiliation. Ask an average citizen to name their congressional or city council representative and you’ll likely get a blank stare, but everybody, it seems, has a passionate opinion about Wal-Mart, Starbucks or Microsoft.

America has always had a mercantile society, but the intimacy between people, brands and culture began to intensify in the early 1980s when state and federal governments started to deregulate markets and curb public sector spending. With this rollback of government, corporate involvement in daily life began to increase dramatically, and brands reached into the public sphere as never before.

Depending on your perspective, this led to either a virtuous or vicious cycle: As government retreated, the role of private institutions expanded, justifying even more government withdrawal. As a result, museums and cultural institutions today must seek out corporate underwriting and accept corporate branding to fulfill their mission - there are no government budgets to support them. One-quarter of California public school students now eat branded fast food in their cafeterias. School principals are forced to cut deals with the likes of McDonald’s and Taco Bell to fund extracurricular arts and sports programs because sufficient funds are no longer provided by the state. (”We’re forced to choose between well-rounded kids and well-rounded kids,” joked one principal I spoke with.) Government Acquisitions Inc., a North Carolina-based company, recently started offering small-town police squads free police cruisers covered, NASCAR-style, in corporate advertising, because state governments are no longer able to pick up the tab for their vehicles. These, and countless other examples have erased the boundaries of “the market,” and made the brandscape virtually inescapable.

Those GUNBOAT Marines

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

The USS Sacremento was fondly referred to as “The Chipin’ Hammer Maru” because of the shape of the ship and her tall smokestack. Turned upside down she resembled a chipping hammer.

Commissioned in 1914 as a Gunboat, she was decommissioned in 1946. The ship’s complement consisted of 163 officers and men, including the Marine detachment of one officer and 30 men. Displacing 1425-tons with a length of 236-ft, she was considerably smaller than a US destroyer.

Typically, she was armed with three 4-in guns mounted forward, aft and on the quarterdeck; two 3-pounders, two 1-pounders and two Lewis machine guns. The crew was armed with Springfield rifles, Browning sub-machine guns and .45-cal pistols. During 1934-35, the Asiatic Fleet was comprised of three cruisers: Augusta (flagship), Black Hawk, and Picos; a destroyer tender, twelve destroyers, 26 submarines; four gunboats, and seven river gunboats that completed the armada. The river gunboats patrolled the Wangpoa and the Yangtze rivers.

The seagoing gunboats rotated assignments as a station ship, anchoring mid-stream at Shanghai. Other ports of call were: Tsingtao, Chefoo, Tientsin and Chinwangtao; as well as Fuchow, Amoy, Swatow, Hong Kong and Canton.

The Marines were quartered just forward of the portside enlisted head and the starboard sail locker, which were dead astern. The compartment was small - just adequate for 30 men. Lockers were secured to the forward bulkhead together with uniform and rifle racks. There was also an office desk, filing cabinets, two chairs, some open space and the post office. Mess tables were on racks attached to the overhead. Twenty-seven men slept on cots head to foot, spaced inches apart all cramped into the space described. The Admin clerk slept in the office space and the mail clerk slept in the post office. The First Sergeant slept in the Chiefs quarters. A head call during the night could be a calamity.

DAILY ROUTINE

At the call: “Up all hands - heave to and lash up - sweepers, man your brooms!” Twenty-nine men woke up, made a bee line to the head and returned to roll bedding, break down the cots and lash them up for storage in the gear locker. Next, scurry to shower and shave with a half bucket of fresh water heated by an open steam line. Brush your teeth, shave then soap down with the remainder and rinse off with seawater. Modesty was thrown out the porthole under these conditions. After the morning toilette, we donned the uniform of the day, policed the quarters and were then ready for morning coffee, usually taken hot and black in white round soup bowls, served topside, weather permitting. During this time, when everyone was out of the compartment, mess cooks were busy setting up mess tables for morning chow. Breakfast usually consisted of coffee, powdered milk, bacon, sausage, ham, scrambled eggs, cereal, creamed dried beef, toast, French toast, pancakes, juices and more. All items, of course, were not served on the same day.

0800 -ALL HANDS TURN OR REPORT FOR SICK CALL

At 0900 the Marine detachment mustered all hands for inspection by our Commanding Officer; after which the First Sergeant put us through our paces with the manual of arms and other “in place” routines. Marines had a variety of duties. Security consisted of the Officer of the Day, Sergeant of the Guard (we had but one Sergeant), Corporal of the Guard, Captain’s Orderly and the fantail watch.

One day I had the Captain’s orderly post for the first time. The OD came by and, after returning my salute, gave me the following message to relate to the Captain, “The evening meal was sufficient in quantity and excellent in quality.” Then he added, “The chronometers are wound.” When I repeated it the Captain smiled knowing that I had no idea what it meant, then dismissed me.

Our battle station was also our deck detail. We kept the brass shined and the deck holystoned and the one pounders cleaned and oiled. This area was above the Captain’s quarters, just forward of amidships. The postal clerk was a Corporal who made a mail run ashore every day we were in port. The movie projectionist was a PFC who showed movies every night, weather permitting. A PFC manned the slopchute and I was the librarian.
