O’s tattoo Saarloos after a Windsor tie

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

But evidently, Forrest Gump forgot his Oakland roots.

Hanks inexplicably led the Camden Yards crowd of 19,652 in a cheer to spell out Orioles during the seventh-inning stretch, just before Baltimore scored two runs on four singles off Kirk Saarloos to break a 3-3 tie en route to a 5-3 win over the A’s.

Bouncing Souls

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

Can you give us a brief history of the Bouncing Souls?

Greg Attonito (vocals): In 1987 we got together in Brian’s basement and wrote a song called “Brain Dead.” We were all in high school together, doing covers of Iron Maiden, Sabbath, Billy Idol, U2, Ramones, The Who, whatever. We did everything ourselves, no help, just did it and kept going. People would get jobs or whatever, but we would keep gravitating back to this. We realized this is what we were good at, it’s what we like, and so whatever money we would make we would just put back into the band and try to keep it going.

Brian Kienlen (bass and vocals): Basically we just started as a high school band and everything that came afterwards has been done to facilitate playing music together. Pete Steinkopf (guitar and vocals): There was never really a plan. The only plan was to not do what everyone else was doing. We didn’t want to go to college. We just didn’t give a shit about that. We just wanted to be a band and that’s it. I guess it’s just a matter of priorities in life.

Stars with scars

Whether parting with around £2,000 to watch Wayne Rooney being given a red card could be construed as a worthwhile investment is a matter for debate. What HDTV viewers did get with screens offering four times more detail than traditional sets is proof positive that anger management isn’t Rooney’s greatest strength. The new television revolution meant every tortured grimace, all the spitting, swearing venom — not to mention Ronaldo’s sneering wink — was so vigorously enhanced you didn’t just see it happening, you practically felt it happening.

Oklahoma blood bank feels effects of lifting tattoo ban

Friday, September 28th, 2007

The institute will hold a blood drive 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in downtown Oklahoma City at the Chase Tower. The Bedlam football- themed drive is sponsored by Devon Energy Corp.

Institute spokeswoman Heidi Cohn said that in 2005, the nonprofit group deferred 1,278 potential donors because they had recently gotten tattoos. The institute has to defer about 43,000 donors annually for various health reasons. Although statistics are not yet available for this year, Cohn said the tattoo-related numbers are growing.

The American Red Cross’ donation guidelines say that hepatitis concerns require a waiting period before a recently tattooed person can donate: Only a few states currently regulate tattoo facilities, so most donors with tattoos must wait 12 months after tattoo application before donating blood, the agency said.

Antje Duvekot: Boys, Flowers, Miles

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Antje Duvekot is one of the more talented, exciting younger singer-songwriters. She writes sophisticated, interesting songs and is not afraid to sing her mind. Many of the tracks were recorded in concert and she is joined by three accompanists on violin, bass and keyboards that suit her self-production to a “T.” Duvekot possesses a pleasing voice that wraps itself around her lyrics. Her songs tend toward highly personal topics, with occasional forays into sharp social commentary, such as on “Judas.” This sympathetic song about a child named Judas, a name chosen with more than a passing nod to the original, is one of her best, although it will keep this CD out of Christian bookstores. “Pearls” combines a Southern odyssey (since she’s from Germany, I assume this not her story) with a socio-political commentary on the South. It’s the most gripping song on the CD. Although I generally am dismayed by obscenity, this is one case of a song with a non-gratuitous obscenity. Duvekot’s often dark writing seeps below the skin and forms a melodic tattoo. However, there’s one grave, unforgivable flaw on this CD. She includes snippets of live performances between most of the songs. That alone would not be bad, except most are in-group jokes and references that totally baffle those who were not present at one of her concerts. Some are completely inappropriate. I don’t need to know who she went home with, the song should stand on its own. These interludes grow longer and more frequent toward the end of the CD. To make matters worse, they are not reflected in the song list, so you have no way of skipping them. Duvekot shows great potential, but she needs to take the art of creating a CD more seriously.
